Rory Miller thought her life was over when a serial killer set his sights on her and forced her into witness protection. But a fresh start on Juniper Landing Island was exactly what she and her family needed. For the first time in years she and her sister hang out at the beach, gossip about boys, and party together. She's also made friends with a local clique--including a magnetic and mysterious boy named Tristan.
But Rory's world is about to change again. Picturesque Juniper Landing isn't what it seems. The truth about the swirling fog that rolls in each morning, the bridge that leads to nowhere, and those beautiful locals who seem to watch Rory's every move is more terrifying than being hunted by Steven Nell. And all Rory ever wanted was the truth. Even if it means learning that she can never go home again. From the best-selling author of the Private and Privilege series comes the second novel in a heart-stopping trilogy about a girl who must pick up the pieces after the only life she's ever known ends.
Disappointing. This book was just disappointing. After loving Shadowlands, I was so happy that I got my hands on this one. Gorgeous cover, but horrible story. I just felt like this was a filler book. There wasn't much interesting, and it was just lacking in so many ways. I still stuck to it because of how much I loved the first one, but man was I disappointed and upset that this one wasn't as good as the first. Like what everyone says, this book suffered from middle book syndrome.
The story continues on from where the first book left off. The first book left everyone with their jaws opened, and I just expected a better explanation for it. This wasn't what I was looking for. I got boring. I got lame. I didn't get exciting or shocking or any of those awesome feels. Rory wasn't that great of a character either. She felt so flat to me, along with all the other characters too. Also, why didn't the author recap what happened in the first book like most authors? I completely forgot Shadowlands, so I clearly won't remember who is who. It really took me some time to figure out who Rory was even in love with. Speaking of love, the romance was bleh. SO BORING. There were no feels, and I felt like it was all fake and stupid. Honestly, the book felt like it just had no heart. The story went in the direction I really didn't want it to go. So upsetting.
I really don't have much to say. Will I give the third book a chance? Yes. It will be the last in the trilogy, so I really hope Kate Brian will end it as well as she started it. I need more action, more in-depth, and I need to be able to interact with the characters. I really hope I find all that in the last book.

  1. Uh oh... that's totally not what I'd expect from Brian :( Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts, Farah! I can understand why you'd prefer a little recap. It's also great to know that you'd continue to read the series despite the disappointment.

  3. Oh no - boring romance? :( That's too bad because I really did enjoy the first book.

  5. I'm so sorry this book disappointed you. I think I'll just pass this series. I hate it when sequels are suckish while the first book was awesome.

  6. Aw. That sucks. But I understand where you're coming from. It's such a waste to have to spend money on a book that has very little significance. Boo. I hope your next read's better!

  7. I'm so sorry that this book wasn't able to deliver and it ended up more as a filler book. Second books in a series are always a hit or miss with me, so I can completely understand some of the issues you had after enjoying the first book so much! I really hope the final book lives up to your expectations Farah! :)

  8. That's disappointing. I actually hated Shadowlands and with an jaw-dropping ending, I hoped the sequel would be better (I need to know how the town even exists!). I shouldn't be surprised but I am very disappointed. Great review! :)

  9. Ahhh, not middle book syndrome! The whole reason I loved the first book was because it was super intense the whole way through. Stinks to hear this one was so boring =(
